Retro looks are back in a big way…from wavey bobs to feminine shift dresses and pencil skirts, I’m all for a return to ladylike looks. But this one I cannot endorse…celebs seem to be going gaga for capes lately; everyone from Liv Tyler to Eva Mendes have been spotted wearing this cold weather catastrophe. To me, it seems like an excellent way to conceal a pregnancy or the fact that you have no arms, and that you are too fashionable to worry about keeping warm.

The fact is, the cape gives you no shape, and to me, looks more super hero than super fashion. However, I appreciate the fact that these celebs are trying to add a little retro flavor to their winter looks. Fortunately, there is a better way.

Behold! The winter coat collection from Mossimo at Target…are you as shocked as I am? Surely, you aren’t going to get Burberry quality here, but if you are looking for an affordable and quicky trendy holiday fix, then this is the way to go. Instead of swathing yourself in an outdated cape, go for cute retro details like large buttons, belts, Peter Pan collars and pretty pleats.

What do you think…are capes cute or not so much?
