Michelle Obama Wears Isabel Toledo & Jason Wu For Inauguration & Ball

2 Comments 20 January 2009

Michelle Obama wears Isabel Toledo on Inguration day. A historical day for America, as well as for fashion in the White House with our new first lady

The new first lady kicked off Inauguration Day with donning a pale yellow wool lace Isabel Toledo shift with matching overcoat. Matched with green pumps, and a diamond brooch. And her jewelry of choice – diamond studs – which completed the stylishly and elegant ensemble. Marking a visual example that change has come to Washington.

“The outfit was made for Michelle with extra warm linings sewn into the interlinings. So that she wouldn’t freeze,” designer Toledo announced.

Michelle shines and sparkles in a gorgeous designer dress by Jason Wu

First lady Michelle Obama celebrated her husband’s inauguration Tuesday night wearing a white chiffon, one-shoulder gown covered in fluffy appliques and beading that will now become part of fashion history.

Designed by 26-year-old Jason Wu, the gathered-skirt gown was surprising for its reserve given Michelle Obama’s love of jewel tones and sleek silhouettes. Yet it was unconventional too, exposing her much-remarked-upon, well-toned arms.

The gown’s slight train swirled pleasingly and her shoulder-sweeping earrings picked up the gown’s sparkle as she and President Barack Obama danced the evening’s first dance at the Neighborhood Ball at Washington’s Convention Center.

Yes, our new first lady’s “gown?” did look Fab, or should I say something that could be washed in Fab laundry soap. I realize Jacqueline H. needs to keep her job, however, her comments were way over the top – “…part of fashion history” !!! Come on.
From a distance, the dress appears to be made of cheap washable cotton. It does nothing to enhance her figure, or skin color. It’s too common, too high on the hips, too, je ne sais pas – fit for the most important gala event in her life, at least to this point in her reign. I would venture to say the “anointed one” was not necessarily pleased with her choice of gowns, as was probably the case when she came forward on election night wearing that frightening black and red dress. The red looked like someone had thrown a bucket of paint by the desingner as an after thought. Everytime I’ve her she does not look comfortable in dresses – I’ll bet she wears the pants in the family. Our new First Lady is not a fashion plate as Jacqueline H. would want us to believe. Sorry, but Michelle O. is no Jackie K.
