Until Vivienne Tam came along last Saturday, it was beginning to look as if Fall / Winter 2010 was going to be all serious, all the time. Collections have focused on black, on function, and on no fooling around. Even the undergarments shown by La Perla were mostly somber colors.
Well, Vivienne Tam’s collection did feature quite a bit of black, gray, and winter white, though the designer herself showed up in fabulous lacquer red. But what a relief: there was plenty of texture, amazing fabrics, and designs based on the Chinese zodiac. There were patterns, layers, and lovely draping, and a few pieces that were – dare I say it? – fun. The scalloped, layered trench coat looked like the perfect way to snap one’s fingers at a dreary wet day and say, “You can’t get me down!”
Maybe Fall / Winter 2010 won’t be so staid and serious after all.
