In the 1980s, it wasn’t so much that the clothes themselves were bad, but that the clothes that professional women had to wear to their jobs in banks or law firms or engineering firms were so strictly dictated and by and large, so awful. It took a few years, but women finally figured out that we didn’t have to imitate men to look professional. And now Michael Kors has come along with a collection that any woman who wore the uniform in the 80s will wish that she could have worn instead.

Michael Kors Fall 2010 collection, which was shown Wednesday at Bryant Park, was full of substantial, totally wearable clothes. There were work looks with originality, and evening wear that was stunning in its simplicity. There was a variety, which is what women generally want. There are days in the fall and winter when we want to look sleek and polished, and there are days when we want to wear the chunky sweater with straight trousers and be comfortable. Kors’ latest collection was proof that you don’t have to give up wearability for beauty at all.
