Winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress, Natalie Portman expressed “disgust” with John Galliano, the British chief designer for Dior, who made anti-Semitic remarks captured on video. Portman, who is Jewish, said, “In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way.”
On the video, filmed at a Paris bar called Le Perle last December, Galliano tells two Italian women, “People like you ought to be dead,” and concluded his rant by saying, “I love Hitler.” Another woman came forward saying she was subject to similar abuse by Galliano at the same bar in October. Portman is the face of Miss Dior Cherie perfume, is a favorite of fashion designers, and is engaged to Benjamin Millepied, who is French. Galliano was suspended as chief designer because of his remarks.
