Fur vests are a functional and fun accessory for fall. A fur vest, real or faux, can add a layer of luxurious warmth. This has been one of my ‘uniforms’ for cool weather dressing, and this year I’ll be pairing my faux fur vest with black skinny jeans and my black cashmere Stella McCartney sweaters. There are many shades and styles of fur vest, many inspired by the glam rocker trend. Some are long and can be belted. Others are shorter and zip or buckle up the front. Look for embellished and beaded fur vests as well.
From 3.1 Phillip Lim, this black dyed lamb fur vest (top left, $1,500.00 at NeimanMarcus.com) is a gorgeous splurge. Made in Italy the v-neck vest is embellished with rhinestones and takes this whole fur vest trend to a new level of luxe wintertime style. The asymmetric and artfully crafted knitted lamb fur vest from Karl Donoghue (top right, $1275 at Intermix.com) is knit with individual fluffy curls of lamb fur. The wide folded collar can be left open or folded up and buttoned to keep you warm and cozy during the chilliest of days. Gryphon’s “Rocker Vest” (lower right, $725.00 at Shopbop.com) is made of faux fur, has an open front and is cut to fall above the waist. Accentuated at the neckline with metal beads, this vest makes a nice contrast to an all black outfit or simple black t-shirt. Inside this vest you’ll find striped lining. Reasonably priced at $198, French Connection’s “Fast Big Foot” Faux Fur Vest, from Bloomingales.com gets you the most faux fur for your dollar. Long with an open placket this lined vest looks great worn open or belted. Pair with a simple tee, dark sweater or black leggings and platform booties.

Double breasted cropped jacket
Trends this fall are far from innocent and sweet; they are edgy and downright provocative. The leather jacket is back in a big way, and a great example is this Alexander Wang Leather-Belted Jacket. It’s a wool double breasted, cropped jacket with a notched collar and snap closures. It also features semi-sheer side panels and light padding in the shoulders. $830.00

White t-shirt women
OK, this next one might or might not be for you, but if you’ve got the attitude, then who am I to stop you? This tee by Hellz Bellz is $28.00

Black skinny jeans
And now, this fall’s piece de resistance: the skinny jeans. They’re simply everywhere. The simpler and darker they are, the more things they’ll go with. With a 7.5 inch rise and 32 inch inseam, these denim skinny jeans have 2% spandex for a little “give.” This kind of jeans with heels are starting to be seen in all the most fashion-forward settings. These are $78.00

Gilt is a good thing this fall. Yes metallics are with us again this season. In addition to the metal stud trend is the appearance of warmer shades of gold and bronze.
Metallic leggings are one version of the many styles of skinny leg coverings for fall. We love these Helmut Lang metallic stretch leggings ($275.00 at Saks.com). Go for muted shades of metallic leggings such as bronze of antique gold. Metallic bronze leggings pair nicely with black boots. Lamé fabric is a great way to infuse metallics into your wardrobe with a softer more romantic look. One example is this Milly dress made of silk with a botanical print ($415 at Net-a-Porter) .
Gold metallic accessories are eclectic and bold. All of the pieces shown are statement pieces combined or alone. The organic shape of the Emilio Pucci bean-shaped clutch ($1,385 at Net-a-Porter) makes it one of the top obsessions for fall. So unique, it an object that can set the tone of an entire look. Missoni’s square link bracelet is a hybrid of a chain link bracelet and a cuff. Bold and offset with a whimsical tassel, this bracelet will look gorgeous set against either sleeveless black sheath or black cashmere turtleneck. Oscar de la Renta’s grommet platform sandal’s elasticized straps are a bold contrast of black and gold with a dramatic contemporary design ($675.00 at Neimanmarcus.com).
Top off your metallic look with a subtle hint of metallic eyeshadow such as Bobbi Brown’s metallic long wear cream eyeshadow ($22 at shop.nordstrom.com)

American Apparel dress
For most of us, it won’t be time for sweaters and boots for another month or so. Why not spend the last weeks of summer wearing wardrobe pieces that will have you looking as hot as the temperature? You can start off with this Sheer Jersey Long Sleeve Henley Dress. This style is easy to layer, so you may be able to wear it even in cooler weather. Made of 100% sheer jersey cotton, it is approximately 36 1/2 inches shoulder to hem. It features a five button placket and a form fitting cut. $36

Marc Jacobs sandals
Some people say that platform shoes are like little pedestals you walk around on, and these Marc by Marc Jacobs Silk Platform Sandals in Iris are a great example of that. They are made of silk with metallic leather piping detail. The heel is covered in metallic leather, and the hardware is all gold metal. The heel on these sandals is 4 inches, and they’re made in Italy. They tend to run small, so order accordingly. Formerly $465, they are on sale for $93

Oliver Peoples sunglasses
Most people think of summer as the only “sunglasses season,” but glare can hit any time of year. You can be prepared with these lovely, over-sized Sofianne Sunglasses by Oliver Peoples. Gray is the go to color for the minimalist look this fall. Gray is a neutral that will give you maximum impact when detailed with pleats, draping, gathering and other sculptural elements. We love all of the options for gray dressing this fall. Minimalist sculptural gray dresses and coats work well with the black leggings, tights and super skinny jeans you already own. Black works well, but you can also get daring by partnering gray with primaries such as red, royal blue and yellow. Or go with a monochromatic look with various shades of gray. One of our editors’ favorites is the Marc Jacobs sweatshirt dress. This dress totally reminds us of the Norma Kamali huge shoulder padded dresses of the ’80s! The RM by Roland Mouret coat is a classic that you can wear for many seasons. Mouret is a true artist when it comes to draping and minimalist statement dressing. The coat reminds me of my warmest winter Hussein Chalayan coat from my favorite store, Workshop, in San Francisco. Go ahead and go neutral this fall and stock up on this wardrobe staple.

A few good accessories can stretch a wardrobe well beyond its normal bounds. The best accessories for long term style investment are generally those that bypass the fad of the moment for more of a timeless quality. Yet they aren’t plain enough to be boring. Here are three examples that will make your fall wardrobe go much further.

Bib necklace
The Carolee LUX Curb Appeal Chain Bib Necklace is gold with faux pearls, but is far from being a demure pearl necklace. It will work with everything from a cocktail dress to a hi-lo combination of luxury tee and vintage jeans. It is 20 inches long with a horn toggle closure. $295.00

Boyfriend blazer
A black tuxedo style like this See by Chole “boyfriend blazer” can be teamed with most anything in your closet. Since it is made from wool flannel, it will take you through all but the coldest weather. You can wear this over a bright party dress, or with casual denim. It has a single button fastening, breast pocket, two welt pockets, back vent, and full lining. $580

Tory Burch boots
I’m not sure what to say about this next pair of boots, other than that they may in fact be the most fabulous pair of boots ever made. The Mary Black Patent boots by Tory Burch have a front zipper with logo pull, rubber outsoles for good traction, and 4 inch heels with gold accents. The picture speaks for itself. Oh, and they’re on sale, too! $282.50

RVCA shirt
When packing for a summer holiday, it’s tempting to throw in as much as your luggage will contain and hope for the best. However, if you plan strategically, you can make a few great pieces go a long way. If you’re headed to a beach, you’ll want a great t-shirt to put on over your swimsuit, or to wear on grocery jaunts, or even to sleep in. RVCA is the hottest brand right now. People everywhere are getting into this line of clothing influenced by the skate, surf, and graffiti art worlds. This RVCA tee in Blood Orange is $21.00

Sam Edelman shoes
What’s a summer vacation without a great pair of sandals? These Sam Edelman Ginger Sandals are gladiator sandals featuring faux leather snakeskin and nail head accents. It has a triple buckle closure, textured foot bed, and a zipper at the heel. $74.25 at buckle.com

Free People dress
The perfect sundress can work for a multitude of situations: picnics, shopping, a casual dinner out, when you need an impromptu swimsuit cover-up. A great example is this Free People “El Ray” Watercolor Tunic Dress with bright flower accents against a gently dappled background, with a keyhole neckline and a dropped drawstring waist. $64.90 at Nordstrom.com.

Is there anything prettier in a wardrobe than a beautiful summer dress? Probably not. Here are three different looks, all of which have a slightly different take on the summer dress.

Ruffle Wrap Dresses
If you have an hourglass or pear-shaped figure, this Eliza J Ruffle Wrap Dress will play up your curves to their best advantage. Soft ruffles frame the neck and run down the front. It features a hidden snap closure in front and a bow on the fabric belt. The approximate shoulder to hem length is 37 ½ inches for regular sizes, 35 ½ inches for petite. $158.00

Elizabeth And James Dresses
Here’s a dress that’s something a little different. This Elizabeth and James Short Tulip Dress has a bodice made entirely out of satin ribbons. It connects to the paisley print skirt at its empire waist. The skirt features a tulip hem. It’s fully lined with a side zipper, made of cotton and silk. $276.50

LaRok Dresses
If it’s all-out sexy you want in a dress, then this LaRok Strapless Chiffon Dress is a good choice. Made of sheer black with nude underlay, it is strapless with a pleated bust, pleated skirt, and ruffled hem. This dress will get you noticed! $200.00

Botkier handbag
Handbags rival shoes as favorite accessories, and it’s no wonder. You don’t have to worry about whether it fits, or if it enhances or disguises figure flaws. And the classics are seasonless, like this medium black trigger leather satchel by Botkier. It has studded handles, a double zip pocket, and an integrated clasp. There are two outer compartments with magnetic closures, and a large central compartment with a zip close. It measures 23 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm and is made of 100% leather. $367.95

Proenza Schouler
Shoes are great pick-me-ups, too, particularly when they’re as stylish as these t-strap wedge sandals from Proenza Schouler. Available in tan or black, they’re made of soft suede and have 3.75 inch glossy cutout heels, buckle at the ankle, and have leather soles. $795.00

Tiered dress
Finally, as dresses go, this one is about as summery as it gets. This Elizabeth and James tiered halter dress in “thistle” (a pale purple) flatters thin figures and looks cool and fresh. It has an empire waist with drawstring and tiered ruffle skirt. Made of cotton, dry clean only. $297.50
