Up-and-coming designer Christian Siriano tends to go a bit over the top with ruffles, but he took it down a notch with his ready to wear collection for Fall 2011. It was flashy, for sure, but most of the looks were sophisticated and relatively free of ruffles, though they did make a few, subdued appearances here and there. The shapes were unusual without being weird, signaling that the young designer’s overall aesthetic is starting to come together.
Favorites included a classic, fitted, short sleeve little black dress paired with altitude sickness-inducing heels (the footwear of choice for most of his pieces, which also resulted in quite a few tumbles on and behind the runway).
A stunning, slightly unexpected formal look was a midnight blue frock with a fitted, mock turtleneck top and a big satin skirt that was full and wrapped in such a way as to reveal a lot of leg. It was beautiful and sexy without being too much.
Another little black dress design was an unusual one-sleeved design with a fitted bodice. It had a very interesting diagonal drape from sleeve to hip and looked modern without looking like an 80s redo.
Finally, a gorgeous lilac floor length column gown featured plenty of ruching as well as a bit of ruffling at the top. The full skirt fell from ruching at the hips, for the perfect combination of classic Hollywood and modern design.
