A leader and an icon among fashion designers, Diane von Furstenberg has now promised to give away 50% of her wealth. The Giving Pledge, set up by investor Warren Buffett and Microsoft chief Bill Gates, is an initiative to encourage America’s richest families to contribute significant sums of money to help solve some of the most serious social problems.
Ms. Von Furstenberg, whose wrap dress is now an icon in the fashion industry, will give away some of her fortune during her lifetime or after her death, and has written a letter explaining where the money is to go.
The designer recently committed to another first: opening her first boutique in Boston, Massachusetts. “My mission,” she told The Boston Herald, “is to empower women through the clothes and bags and accessories, and through mentoring and through philanthropy.”
