Millions of women will be waiting with their “Oh, snap!”s ready to go when Jessica Simpson appears on The Oprah Winfrey Show in March. There is little doubt that Oprah will be bringing up the topic of John Mayer’s recent big-mouthedness in which he referred to Simpson as “sexual napalm.” To be specific, Mayer told Playboy, “That girl, for me, is a drug. And drugs aren’t good for you if you do lots of them. Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me,” he said. “Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm.” For those who don’t know, napalm is a substance that gelatinizes gasoline, making it usable in flamethrowers to maximize destruction.
The general consensus in the mainstream media is that Mayer needs to shut up and play guitar. In his Playboy interview he managed to insult Simpson, ex-girlfriend Jennifer Aniston, black people in general and black women in particular. The musically gifted, yet media-challenged rocker has inspired the ire of everyone from the Philadelphia Inquirer’s music critic to Simpson’s overly-protective (to the point of creepiness) dad Joe Simpson. Mayer is apparently learning the hard way that musical talent isn’t a get out of karmic jail free card.
