It was a night of shimmering black and sparkling metallics: the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs), held this year at London’s Royal Opera House, may celebrate the crème de la crème of the British film and television industry, but each year all eyes are on the red carpet to gawp at the spectacular dresses the female stars have worn for the occasion.
This year was certainly no different. The 65Th BAFTAs ceremony was awash with outfits fit for royalty: Mad Men and Drive star Christina Hendricks rocked up in a gorgeous corset black column dress, and Meryl Streep – who won Best Actress for her role in The Iron Lady - kept to the dramatic black theme in an elegant corset gown by Vivienne Westwood.
Some of the celebs had been given the Midas touch, dazzling cameras and onlookers alike with shimmering gold cocktail dresses. Star of Pan Am, Christina Ricci, Silent Witness actress Emilia Fox, and newcomer Jessica Chastain – nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Help - were not afraid to stand out on the red carpet in their gold ensembles.
Ricci wore a wrap-around in shiny gold, whilst Chastain wore a clingy high-waisted number that accentuated her curves. Fox, who wore a sleek black gown for last year’s event, opted for a glittery, gold, high-waisted ruffle gown for this year’s ceremony. Carrying on the glitzy theme were Olivia Williams in a sparkly off-the-shoulder gown and Melissa George, who wore a shimmering black gown by Victoria Beckham.
In spite of this apparent trend for black and gold, Daniel Wingate, Design Director of Escada, told the Daily Mail: “There’s no right or wrong color for the red carpet… The stars want materials that are comfortable and don’t crease. Millions of eyes are on them and it’s vital they look their best.”
The BAFTAs may only come but once a year, but let’s hope these wonderful dresses are worn more than once!
