The Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge is receiving great reviews, all of which express surprise over the casting of Hollywood bombshell Scarlett Johansson as Catherine. It’s not so far-fetched when you consider the role, and when you consider that Arthur Miller was married to his own curvy blond (Marilyn Monroe) for a time.

According to USA Today, Johansson “disappears so completely into the role of Catherine, the plucky but naïve niece of a longshoreman, that you won’t stop to consider the qualities that make her distinctly suited to the part.” Playing the male lead of Uncle Eddie is Liev Schreiber. He and his wife have raised Catherine since her mother died, and as the girl grows up, his protectiveness begins to morph into jealousy when his wife’s single young cousin from Italy visits.

It’s an Arthur Miller play, so you know it will at least be poignant, and at most be shattering, and Schreiber, as expected, gives a terrific performance. But it’s Johansson, almost unrecognizable in a brunette wig and a Brooklyn accent that is surprising and wowing the audiences and critics.

  1. She’s not my favorite actress. However, because of the great reviews, I wanna see her in that play.
