Changing your hair color with the seasons is as natural as swapping your boots for flip-flops. This summer, no matter what color your hair is, the overall trend is to go softer. Redheads, blondes and brunettes take note.
The Best Red for Summer
“Women with red hair will be going from a fiery red to a softer strawberry color,” says Jan-Marie Arteca, colorist at the Ted Gibson Salon in New York City. Think about stepping away from Christina Hendrick’s bold hue and leaning toward Amy Adams’ subtler shade. The color is multidimensional with hints of gold and copper tones breaking through, and with yellow undertones.
The Best Brown for Summer
“The chocolate brown color complemented by a combination of caramel and honey accents, as seen on Jennifer Lopez, is the look we’re going to be seeing this summer,” says Arteca. Women will be softening up their shade with an ombre effect. “My clients like the idea of ombre hair — lighter ends with no roots, and very little maintenance.” Depending on your shade of brown, you can play with different tones to soften it up. The key is to make the highlights look natural, so don’t stray too far from your shade.
The Best Blond for Summer
All blondes want to go brighter when the weather gets nicer. If you’re in this color category, consider softening up your shade and making the hue appear more sun-kissed. Platinum blondes should consider strategically placing champagne-colored highlights around their faces to soften the icy look, and buttery blondes should add a few face-framing highlights to achieve a natural bleached-out look.
