Who says everyone can’t look great in green for St. Patty’s Day? Here are some ideas that will have you holiday perfect and your friends green with envy.

OK, so Alexander Wang also gave New York an awful lot of gray, brown, and especially black in his Fall / Winter 2010 collection presented last Saturday. But there’s just enough edge to it to keep it from being all work and no play. There was a lot of menswear influence, with blazer details invading even the Bermuda shorts.
There was enough velvet to give it a little glam, and enough skin to remind us that underneath those dark layers and substantial fabrics, we are, indeed women. The idea of the velvet backpack may catch on for Fall / Winter 2010, and if so, hallelujah. Maybe it’s been the economic malaise of the past few seasons, but the offerings for next fall and winter have been heavy on the gray and the menswear influence. I, for one, wouldn’t throw out those bright red tights, if only to keep a modicum of color alive in what looks to be a season in which dark, serious colors reign.

Just look at Isabel Marant’s fall ‘09 runway, where sweatshirt tees go from gym to glam when paired with layered skirts and embellished ankle boots. Alexander Wang has been taking sweatpants out of the gym for a few seasons now, and given their slouchy, not sloppy cut, they could almost pass as dress pants if worn with heels and a blazer- just don’t tell your boss you slept in them the night before. The key is to look for pieces with unexpectedly luxe touches (like cashmere or sequins), or pair casual ones with something more polished- in other words, leave the sneakers at home. Quite the influence considering the mounting global obsession with Oil. While governments argue, our trendy haute couture designers see this as the perfect opportunity to jump on the band wagon, and deliver what the economics are saying. Oil or bust.

We see Alexander Wang, Kai Kühne, and Roksanda Ilincic all enhancing the devilish look of the modern oil trend. With black leather, silks, patent leathers, and even materials that look like plastic bags. The price tag might even seem more reasonable. Compared to exorbitant fuel costs. But one thing is for sure. And that is you will have more mileage out of your designer wear.
