Ashlee and Jessica Simpson have been on a sort of roller coaster ride in 2009. Ashlee’s acting drew heavy criticism when she appeared in 12 episodes of nighttime soap Melrose Place. Jessica’s weight was constantly scrutinized, and she went through a painful breakup with Tony Romo. Then her beloved dog disappeared. It just wasn’t Jessica’s year. Of the two, Ashlee probably came through 2009 less scarred by celebrity, but in the world of celebrity gossip, all that can change in an instant.

But through it all, Ashlee and Jessica have been able to count on each other, as Ashlee recently told People magazine.

Ashlee, who appears on the December cover of Women’s Health, defended her sister against judgmental people, saying, “My sister has an incredible body. I feel sorry for anyone who would judge her, because she’s one sexy lady.” She also referred to the people who act as the weight police as “disgusting.”

Earlier this year, Jessica defended Ashlee against those who criticized her acting ability in Melrose Place, saying that the scripts she was given were “crap.”

Ashlee, in addition to being a wife and mother, is set to star as Roxy in Chicago this December. It will be her Broadway debut.

For celebrities who are always traveling, sometimes the companionship of a canine friend can be just the thing to help ease the loneliness of waking up in different cities all the time. Sadly, Jessica Simpson lost her beloved Daisy to a coyote last week, and her friends fear that it will “put her into a tailspin.” Daisy was the confidante that never shared her secrets with others, her faithful friend who would curl up next to her in bed when she was feeling lonely.

And, as any pet owner can tell you, you can’t simply replace one pet with another. No doubt she’ll be “mom” to another adorable pup one of these days, but only after she’s had time to mourn Daisy.

Last week the 5-year-old “maltipoo” disappeared from outside Simpson’s L.A. area home, apparently taken by coyotes, which are common in that area. Dog rescue hunters from a group called Find Toto went on an extensive search, but even with the help of tracking dogs, they found no sign of Daisy.

Simpson’s had a tough year, romantically, professionally, and personally. After a break-up with Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo, she was criticized for gaining weight and wearing frumpy jeans, and her new reality television show has met with plenty of eye-rolling. Fortunately, her friends and family have been supporting her and hoping she’ll catch a break soon.

But for the most part, friends say she is happier hiding out at home because she feels like the media world is judging her. Romo reportedly dumped Simpson on the eve of her 29th birthday last week, and this came after another round of media attention focused on Simpson’s weight fluctuations. Earlier this year, she was ridiculed for wearing “mom jeans” during a concert and was called many variations on the word “chunky.”

She has, however, been spotted recently leaving a session with her personal trainer in Hollywood, as she prepares for shooting of the VH1 reality show titled “The Price of Beauty.”

Since the breakup, speculation has been that Romo has felt “pressured” to choose a wedding date, according to The National Enquirer. However, his relationship with Simpson has been off and on several times since they met. The final straw was said to be Simpson’s birthday plan for a Barbie and Ken themed party. Romo wanted something quieter and more intimate.

Jessica Simpson’s new reality television series was picked up by VH1 and will begin shooting this month, according to MTV News. The series is titled “The Price of Beauty” and is supposed to be a documentary series about body image. She and her dad Joe will produce. In the series, Jessica will travel to different places around the globe, looking at local fashions, beauty regimens, and body acceptance. The idea for the show reportedly came from a production company called RDF Media. The subject of the media and body image is one that’s close to Jessica’s heart. Earlier this year she received a lot of media attention because she gained some weight. Her every mistake on stage has also been a favorite target of critics, and she acknowledges this, telling MTV, “I know that every day the media’s going to challenge me, is going to want to bring me down.”

As for fans, Jessica’s weight gain and misstatements are two reasons they like her. She’s not perfect, and that’s OK. Even among the more educated crowd, Simpson can sell a lot of magazines. The June 2009 issue of Vanity Fair in which she gave and interview and appeared on the cover was a huge seller.

Actor Lane Garrison from FOX television drama Prison Break was released from a California state prison Wednesday morning, and one of the first places Garrison went was to visit Jessica Simpson and her dad Joe at Joe’s home in Encino. Jessica’s sister Ashlee was reportedly not at the residence.

E! Online reports that Joe Simpson was youth minister to Garrison when they lived in Texas.

Garrison, 28, settled a lawsuit recently with Michelle Ohana and the parents of 17-year-old Vahagn Setian, who was killed when the Land Rover Garrison was driving while intoxicated in 2006 crashed into a tree. Setian was a passenger in the Land Rover, as was Ohana, who survived.

After visiting the Simpson family, Garrison was taken to a Tarzana rehab center where he will spend the next five months as an in-patient.

Garrison – who pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and two other alcohol-related charges, stemming from a 2006 crash that killed a teen – is now entering a five-month program at the Tarzana Treatment Center in the residential in-patient facility.

Garrison commented to reporters as he left the Simpson home, saying, “I’m looking forward to getting on with my life and doing the right thing and helping people.”
