Marc Jacobs showed a memorable collection for spring 2010 in New York in September and in his front row were two rather iconoclastic women: Madonna and Lady Gaga. If Gwen Stefani wasn’t there, she should have been. Actually, it almost looked like those three could have inspired most of the looks, which were ruffled and frilled, yet closely fitted and brief. The models wore their hair in ballerina buns, and makeup consisted of pale faces with winged black eyeliner. All the models were in flats, too, which was unexpected.
Jacobs recently spoke with Women’s Wear Daily about the increasing media attention to famous people’s personal lives – including fashion designers. Jacobs says that it’s simply a sign of the times. People are entertained by people’s real lives, whatever their profession. “And fashion has also reached this kind of proportion like football or sport, you know – a spectator sport.” He mentioned the use of sports stars to peddle just about everything back in the 1970s (remember Joe Namath wearing stockings?). Perhaps now is the moment for fashion designers to capture that kind of attention.
Overall, Jacobs is positive about the trend of fascination with other people’s real lives, saying, “it demystifies the experience. Any behind the scenes look is always telling of the fact that these are real people doing real jobs and who work really hard.”
We have to accept the way the world – whether we think it is good or bad – is and deal with it, according to Jacobs. One thing that has changed in the past couple of decades is that you no longer have to go to Paris to get Parisian perfume. Because of the internet, pretty much anyone with the money can get anything from anywhere. Exclusivity is a different concept now. “Life changes, and the Internet and the media have been a big part of the change that exists now. It’s just better to accept things for what they are and enjoy them.”
Here’s to enjoying things like Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2010 ready to wear collection!
For most of us, it won’t be time for sweaters and boots for another month or so. Why not spend the last weeks of summer wearing wardrobe pieces that will have you looking as hot as the temperature? You can start off with this Sheer Jersey Long Sleeve Henley Dress. This style is easy to layer, so you may be able to wear it even in cooler weather. Made of 100% sheer jersey cotton, it is approximately 36 1/2 inches shoulder to hem. It features a five button placket and a form fitting cut. $36
Some people say that platform shoes are like little pedestals you walk around on, and these Marc by Marc Jacobs Silk Platform Sandals in Iris are a great example of that. They are made of silk with metallic leather piping detail. The heel is covered in metallic leather, and the hardware is all gold metal. The heel on these sandals is 4 inches, and they’re made in Italy. They tend to run small, so order accordingly. Formerly $465, they are on sale for $93
Most people think of summer as the only “sunglasses season,” but glare can hit any time of year. You can be prepared with these lovely, over-sized Sofianne Sunglasses by Oliver Peoples. “I wanted the campaign to be very bold, very sensual and very atmospheric. To carry off all these references and all this sophistication, we needed the ultimate performer and for me, that is Madonna ” says Marc Jacob.
Now we have to go ‘Haute Couture’ upon visiting fashion week. And my choice designer for that category is Marc Jacobs with his fall 2009 collection. To the large assembly of freezing paparazzi outside the Lexington Armory, the Marc Jacobs show kicked off with a portrayal of sculptured designs. And of course a lot of fashion composition and flare. But what are we seeing here? Fun 80’s fashion being revived? With a touch of color desperation? But wait a minute. Those colors do fair well, and bravo Marc for going all the way. I am enjoying the combinations of crushed purples, mixed with greens. Or those very bold gold and yellow numbers. But hey it works, especially for dressing the ‘young’ elite of Hollywood. This collection is bright and electric. And really what more do we expect from Marc? Then these over the top and daring designs. He really has never played it safe. But with such international recognition in the fashion world, we just could not over look this playful jester’s world.
Chloè Bronze Frill Sleeve Dress – $477.34. The frill sleeves and waist belt are flattering all the right places and the bronze is a great colour for autumn. Wear with black tights to enhance the impact of the colour.
Now there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying designer brands. On the contrary, it is a discovery into ones personal style, taste, and of course our personal ticket into fashion. Now upon closer review, a few of my favorite brands (and I am quite sure yours too). Are Marc Jacobs, Chloè, and of course that priceless accessory – the diamond. But my choice today are Deco diamonds.
Sample a Marc Jacobs on for size. You can never go wrong with this luxury designer brand out of New York. And with so many handbag design choices, you will have a hard time picking one. So I recommend two!
