Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West once again showed why he’s rapidly turning into a has-been. In a moment that some say was staged, West interrupted the acceptance speech of young singer Taylor Swift, took the mike from her, and opined that Beyonce should have won the category rather than Swift. He left Swift dumbfounded on the stage, while Beyonce sat in the audience, clearly incredulous at West’s behavior.
Once they realized what was going on, the audience booed West as he left the stage. He got his second helping of comeuppance later in the evening when Beyonce was awarded the coveted top award “Video of the Year.” Fortunately, she was far classier than West, yielding her stage time to Taylor Swift so that she could properly give her acceptance speech.
West later issued a semi-appropriate apology via his blog (while still insisting that Beyonce’s video should have won), but to VMA fans, it was far too little, too late. Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill posted on his Twitter account, “At least we got to see the worst haircut since 1984 try to steal the spotlight from lovely Taylor Swift.”
The advertising theme for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards is West Side Story. The awards show airs Sept. 13. Katy Perry released a picture from the recent photo shoot promoting the awards show. Perry, along with VMA nominees Taylor Swift, Ne-Yo, Cobra Starship and host Russell Brand do a modern version of the famous West Side Story tune “Tonight.” Each of the artists is filming the tune separately, and the clips will be melded together through the magic of television.
Meanwhile, Perry’s career is still in high gear. Her One of the Boys CD was responsible for two number one hit songs, “Hot N Cold” and “Waking Up in Vegas,” this after having been signed and dropped by two labels until she realized great success with One of the Boys. Perry has said that she thinks the record companies didn’t like how headstrong she was, but once they let her have control over her CD, it all worked out great.
Though she as a unique fashion sense – one more thing about her that fans love – she plans to concentrate on music for the time being. In other Katy Perry news, her cat, Kitty Purry was recently nominated for Best Celebrity Pet for the MTV Teen Choice Awards. Purry didn’t win, but the competition was quite formidable including the winner: President Barack Obama’s new dog, Bo.
Pop music sensation Katy Perry recently did an interview with MTV, one that MTV had been trying pushing for months. Perry’s recent and rapid ascent to super stardom kept her schedule too busy to shoehorn in any extra sit-down time. But finally, last week, Perry met for a no-holds-barred interview about everything from people confusing her with actress Zoey Deschanel to her rumored relationship with Josh Groban to her friendship with singer Rihanna, who has herself been much in the headlines recently.
Steering away from the controversy surrounding Rihanna’s stormy relationship with Chris Brown, Perry said that the two are good friends, and hang out together like girlfriends do: for drinks, or dinner, or just to talk. Referring to Rihanna as a “cool chick,” Perry also expressed admiration for Rihanna’s character and sense of style.
And Perry also denies the rumors that she is in a relationship with Josh Groban, the tenor-ish concert singer famous for, among other things, singing at the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama in January.
Perry, 24, has recently expressed interest in appearing in films as an adjunct to her musical career.
Pink – The singer joked that she “brought a carnival with me” in reference to her boldly striped Alexis LaMontagne gown, accessorized with Neil Lane jewels.
