Dreams in Blue

Posted on 05 May 2009 by Angelique

Fashion designers have been favoring shades of blue this spring. As just one example, Aquascutum?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s spring 2009 collection was almost all in blues, from soft and powdery to sophisticated and navy. Purples this season have a lot of blue in them, making some of them more of a periwinkle blue. That?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s good news, because lavender is flattering to many skin tones and hair colors, from platinum blonde to shiny black.

One of the greatest things about blue is that, aside from flattering most people, it works just as well in the most casual pieces as in the most formal.

Spring and summer fashion embraces lots of dreamy blues this year, from denim used in new ways to blue jeweled sandals.

This Lanvin lacquer-heel denim pump is touted by Elle magazine as a clever way to circumvent ?¢‚Ǩ?ìno denim?¢‚Ǩ¬ù rules at work. They may be denim, but they?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re anything but casual. $785 at Bergdorf Goodman.

1

While this casual blue ombre dress won?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t fly at most offices, it is perfect for summer picnics and laid back weekend activities. Made of cotton, this wrap dress by Converse One Star is available at Target for $33.

2

I guess most of us don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t really need a blue formal silk chiffon gown for our social plans this summer, but hey, a girl can dream, can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t she? This silk chiffon gown embroidered with agate is $3250 at Gucci stores.

3

Is there anything more glamorous than jeweled sandals to show off perfectly pedicured feet? It would be hard to find a pair of sandals more gorgeous than these Valentino leather sandals detailed with jewels (sigh ?¢‚Ǩ¬¶) These are $675 and along with similar styles can be found at Jeffrey, NYC.

Exclusive: Q&A With Alexander McQueen

Posted on 11 February 2009 by Angelique

Alexander McQueen is no doubt up to his neck in his fabulous fall 2009 collection, with Paris Fashion Week just weeks away. But the legendary designer set aside a little time for the Cut to talk about one of 2009’s most exciting collaborations, his forthcoming Target collection. The line doesn’t hit stores until March 4, but New Yorkers can purchase it next weekend. Yes, we are special. Target’s McQ Market will run from Saturday, February 14 through Sunday, February 15 at St. John?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Center on Houston Street. So don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, celebrate McQueen. Now you have a reason to be excited for Valentine’s Day.

Cut: How did you approach designing the Target collection differently from your McQ line?

Alexander McQueen: Well it is actually not so far away from how I design the McQ collection; I started with a feeling, a girl and her spirit, and ran with it. There are elements which are naturally “me” which stayed the same, the design details and the edge, for example.

Cut: What was the greatest challenge of designing this collection?

AM: Obviously we worked using different fabrics than we would usually use; but I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t think it was a compromise ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù it was more using fabrics which suited the designs. But this was definitely a new way of designing and producing for us.

Usually the fabric treatments can be costly processes, so we worked a bit differently. It was more the fact that we used zips on knitwear and cotton binding on a silk dress. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s like combining the rough with the smooth, in a way, but we used details to toughen up the softer pieces in the collection.

Cut: Why did you decide to do the line?

AM: The idea of increasing my visibility in the U.S. for McQ was appealing to me ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù I liked the idea of someone in the Midwest buying a piece of McQ and taking a bit of London home with them. I like the idea of infiltrating an area that is not really exposed to me or my work.

Cut: How did the collaboration come about? Did Target approach you?

AM: We started speaking with Target about a year ago ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù they approached me regarding a collection with a twist and asked if there was a creative element or muse that inspires me. Knowing the company?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s amazing designer history and strong philosophy of offering great design and high quality at an excellent value, I was excited at the opportunity to partner with them.

Cut: What do you hope this line does for your brand?

AM: I think the idea of mixing luxury and mass-market fashion is very modern, very now ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù no one wears head-to-toe designer anymore. It was an exciting challenge to translate my vision into a mass-produced product that is accessible to people who otherwise would have never been exposed to my work.

Cut: Would you say the fashion world has come to terms with designers doing lower-priced lines?AM: Absolutely! I think the idea of mixing luxury and mass-market fashion is very modern ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù wearing head-to-toe designer has become a bit pass?ɬ©. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a new era in fashion ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù there are no rules. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together.

Cut: What concerns did you have going into the project?

AM: I didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have many concerns; I believe that if you maintain your high line quality and overall aesthetic, as I did with Target, a partnership like this is actually quite brilliant for a designer.

Cut: What was the greatest surprise?

AM:The speed at which the collections were realized! I have to work quickly with McQ and McQueen, but my design team and the Target production facility worked so quickly and produced a great line.

Cut: Do you think consumers in Middle America are ready for McQueen?

AM: Definitely ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù it was an exciting challenge to translate my vision into a mass-produced product that is accessible to people who otherwise would have never been exposed to my work. I think there will be some McQueen fans who are excited for the collection, and of course the loyal Target shoppers who will be pleasantly surprised at the edginess and level of style offered.

Cut: What was your inspiration?

AM: The pieces in the collection are more about a spirit and less about any one specific inspiration.
The heart of McQ is rebellious youth culture, a certain spirit that embodies the regular line as well as the Target collection. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s an ?¢‚ǨÀúeighties punk aesthetic that evokes the anarchy and social change of the time. Youth culture now really looks back and embraces the past, but keeps it contemporary but not sticking to one particular style. I thought of what The Duke Spirit’s lead singer, Leila Moss, might wear on stage. She has brilliant stage presence, very energetic and compelling.

Cut: Did your decision to do the line have anything to do with the economic downturn?

AM: It is a difficult time with the current economy and we are delighted to be able to offer an affordable line to fashion-savvy shoppers. Fashion and style should not be exclusive to the luxury market or to those who have a certain amount of money.

Haute Winter Trend: Colored Tights

Posted on 26 November 2008 by Angelique

Gucci and Luella featured Colored Tights in their 2008 runway shows

I must admit, I’ve never been a big fan of tights. Living in Florida, I can have bare legs pretty much year-round. However, this winter has been unusually cold, leaving me looking for a warmer alternatives.

Though this isn’t ground-breaking news, opaque tights have been big on the fashion scene for fall/winter of ‘08. Basic black is a must, but other colors are making their way into the mainstream. Gray, navy blue and deep purples are favorites of mine, with olive greens, mustard and fuchsia popular colors among the most daring fashionistas.

But how do you pull off all of these colorful ensembles? It’s easier than you think, and is a great way to set yourself apart from all of the drab winter colors out there. Try these combinations and see what works best for you:

Gray:?Ǭ† pair gray tights with a plaid skirt or dress, Gray also looks great with yellow and can basically be worn just like black tights for a more muted look.

Navy: same rules apply to navy tights as gray tights, but stay away from pair them with purples or blues. Navy tights with a black dress can look really sophisticated if done right, so consider that option.

Deep purple: I wore my deep purple tights today with a gray dress, a black cardigan, and black patent flats. Purple tights are also great under a fall floral dress or with plaid or houndstooth skirts.

Brights: if you are going to wear bright tights in winter, then be sure to mute the rest of your look. Yellow tights with a gray dress or fuchsia tights with a black skirt and top are just right. Too much color may have you looking like an evil superhero, so just be careful with that.

I love Target’s Merona line …at $5.99 a pair, you really can’t lose, and they offer all of the basic colors you’ll need for this winter. Hue is a little more expensive (about $12.50 a pair), but they offer a great variety of really beautiful colors (I must have peacock!).

Hue Tights, $12.50

How have you worn colored tights this winter? Tell us your favorite way to work this trend and how it fits into your wardrobe!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2009: Erin Fetherston

Posted on 08 September 2008 by Angelique

Erin Fetherston, Spring 2009 Collection (source)

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; I love Erin Fetherston. I am cursing myself for not snagging anything from her Target line, and I always look for her new stuff every fashion week. La Fetherston has Parisian roots in her fashionista training, which clearly come through in her designs. Her clothes make me want to frolic in the fields surrounding Versailles with Kirstin Dunst, and to later have a lovely pic-nic with the Jolie-Pitt clan by the river Seine. But that’s another blog all together.

Back to the matter at hand…so pastels for spring aren’t exactly a groundbreaking idea. There’s no doubt that every other designer from Nanette Lepore to Max Azria will dabble in lighter palettes for sprint. What I love about Erin’s line is the metallic elements, vintage prints and flounce upon flounce upon flounce. Seriously, I had a “Peaches N’ Cream” Barbie doll in the 1980’s that had this beautiful peach dress, and I think that Erin may have had the same one. Observe:

Peaches N’ Cream Barbie (source)

So, the lesson learned from the Erin Fetherston show:metallic floral or 1970’s bohemian fashionista prints and pastel chiffon are totallly in for spring. If you are like me and can’t afford the couture stuff, save yourself a thousand bucks and take thee to the thrift store for vintage prom/bridesmaids dresses. The more flounce, the better. Just be sure to wear a slip under the transparent stuff, okay? Nipples are only acceptable on the runway.
