Marc Jacobs RTW Spring 2010 Collection

Marc Jacobs showed a memorable collection for spring 2010 in New York in September and in his front row were two rather iconoclastic women: Madonna and Lady Gaga. If Gwen Stefani wasn’t there, she should have been. Actually, it almost looked like those three could have inspired most of the looks, which were ruffled and frilled, yet closely fitted and brief. The models wore their hair in ballerina buns, and makeup consisted of pale faces with winged black eyeliner. All the models were in flats, too, which was unexpected.

Jacobs recently spoke with Women’s Wear Daily about the increasing media attention to famous people’s personal lives – including fashion designers. Jacobs says that it’s simply a sign of the times. People are entertained by people’s real lives, whatever their profession. “And fashion has also reached this kind of proportion like football or sport, you know – a spectator sport.” He mentioned the use of sports stars to peddle just about everything back in the 1970s (remember Joe Namath wearing stockings?). Perhaps now is the moment for fashion designers to capture that kind of attention.

Overall, Jacobs is positive about the trend of fascination with other people’s real lives, saying, “it demystifies the experience. Any behind the scenes look is always telling of the fact that these are real people doing real jobs and who work really hard.”

We have to accept the way the world – whether we think it is good or bad – is and deal with it, according to Jacobs. One thing that has changed in the past couple of decades is that you no longer have to go to Paris to get Parisian perfume. Because of the internet, pretty much anyone with the money can get anything from anywhere. Exclusivity is a different concept now. “Life changes, and the Internet and the media have been a big part of the change that exists now. It’s just better to accept things for what they are and enjoy them.”

Here’s to enjoying things like Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2010 ready to wear collection!

Marchesa to Launch First Handbag Collection

The company will debut handbags at its spring presentation, which takes place Sept. 16 at The Chelsea Art Museum in New York. The collection of 28 clutches and evening cases are as elaborate as the brand’s dresses, with such details as beading, pleating and corsetry.

Key styles include a silver clutch with a profusion of beading and embroidery in an elongated oval shape and clutches with tassels. There are also exotic skins such as alligator, crocodile and lizard done in rich colors like aubergine and ochre. The bags will retail from $995 to $5,000 for an exotic skin.

“Some people don’t always have an occasion for a gown,” said Chapman. “You could wear these with jeans and a T-shirt.”

The company has no plans to launch ancillary categories as of yet, but “We always keep our minds open,” Chapman said coyly. In the past, Marchesa has tapped Christian Louboutin to partner on shoes for presentations. See entire article at WWD

Women’s Wear Daily Reports: Michael Jackson, Style Icon

King of Pop Michael Jackson dies in Los Angeles

RIP Michael Jackson

Say what you will about Michael Jackson during the last few years of his life — and with the baby-dangling-out-the-window behavior, bad plastic surgery and child molestation allegations, a lot has been said — but it takes a certain kind of star to turn a single sequined glove into a cultural symbol.

During the Eighties and into the Nineties, Jackson, who died of cardiac arrest in Los Angeles Thursday, became as much a trendsetter for fashion as he was for music. There’s the red leather motorcycle jacket he rocked in the “Beat It” video; the white ankle socks, black fedora and black loafers he wore when he moonwalked (and that walk alone is almost as legendary as Neil Armstrong’s); the military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses he toured in during the “Thriller” era; the white V-neck T-shirt that he always eventually stripped down to onstage, and finally, there was that glove, first worn during a performance of “Billie Jean” during a television special in 1983.

More than two decades later, The King of Pop’s style still inspires the fashion set. For spring 2009, Balmain sent a Jackson-esque military jacket down the runway, and it was picked up by celebrities like Beyoncé Knowles and Rihanna (trend-setting singers resetting a trend). Jackson hits like “Thriller” and “PYT (Pretty Young Thing)” are soundtrack staples for runway shows even still.

The singer was also a shopper — a big one. During the Nineties, he reportedly spent an average of $35 million a year. While making the 2003 documentary “Living With Michael Jackson,” reporter Martin Bashir saw him shell out $6 million for marble chess sets, 10-foot urns and other expensive art objects. In 2005, he blew through $150,000 at Harrods in 30 minutes. And in 2006, he went on an impromptu midnight shopping spree at Topshop’s Oxford Street flagship in London. But by that time, Jackson was hundreds of millions of dollars in debt — and looking to sell Neverland Ranch. Read entire article at Women’s Wear Daily
