The Highlights: Fashion Week Los Angeles 2012

Fashion week in Los Angeles produced shows and events in LA’s downtown area lasting nearly two weeks. They showcasing the city’s most fashion-forward brands and designers in the LA’s most progressive venues.

Fashion Week: Oct 15-21

Maggie Barry – studs and leather

Monday was a big day as 12 designers debuted new looks throughout the city. Maggie Barry showed off shine, studs and leather with the Michael Antonio footwear group at Exchange LA for a one-day-only event. The California Market Center hosted an opening night reception fashion show at CMC while LA Canvas and Cooper Design Space presented “A Made in LA” Celebration curated by fashion bloggers.

For two days the Designers and Agents Trade show was held in the bright, open high ceiling environment of the New Mart, showcasing designers with a minimalist aesthetic while art installations and DJ’s accessorized the event. The Coeur Trade Show took over the Cooper Design Space Monday and Tuesday while Monday through Wednesday the Fashion Market Week in the LA Fashion District took place. The Select Contemporary Trade Show at the California Market Center showcased contemporary designs for two days while Focus Trade Show focused on balancing the presentation of both emerging designers and established brands . Transit LA Shoe Show, LA Kids Market, and Style Fashion Week continued to host multiple day events ranging between Monday and Friday at the California Market Center and Vibiana.

On Tuesday GenArt Global & Tribe presented Nike Kondakis, a socially and environmentally conscious fashion line out of Kenya, at a one day afternoon event  while Fashion Business Inc. hosted “All Aboard: LA’s Fashion Platform” at Union Station, offering programs and educational resources like fashion school to up and coming designers.

On the 17 The 16th Bar debuted the latest in petite women’s wear by designer Frankie Ortiz. GenArt’s Fresh Faces in Fashion debuted at the Vibiana, sponsored by Moroccanoil and Voga Wine while the first show hosted by a tech startup, the Tech Fashion Show, took place at Cross Campus in Santa Monica. Haus of Allure and Fashion Minga showcased their designs Friday While Titelle, LA Fashion Weekend and Gallant Suits wrapped up the weekend.

Other Fashion Week Events

Some designers kicked off fashion week early. On October 10 the Los Angeles Fashion Council featured intimate shows at the Carondelet House near downtown. While Africa Fashion Week Los Angeles focused on fashion as a means to encourage trade and export in Africa, using fashion to showcase African culture. Emerging designers debuted their work at the Papillion Institute of Art.

On Thursday the 11th Downtown LA Art Walk merged with fashion at Exchange LA by Project Ethos. Dj’s spun Eurpoean electronic music as emerging fashion designer shows by designers like Jose Galeana of Galean Designs,  Felicia Barth-Aasen of Collective 26, Lawren Michele Cappelletti of Lawren Michele and many more presented their freshest looks for LA’s fashion elite.  The same night Urban 1972 hosted their Stepping Out party, showcasing the latest LA hipster trends at 1309 S Flower.

The first weekend was full of fashion diversity. As Concept Los Angeles merged entertainment with design by presenting the latest in fashion design, art and music in their new home, Siren Studios. Skingraft kept to its chic edge hosting their show at an underground undisclosed location while Elite Curves was all show at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Strutting a plus size, sizes 12 and up, fashions full of glam and fab.
